Phase 3 – Evolutionary Accessibility

Inclusive Studio website passes Phase 3 of Evolutionary Accessibility

As you will remember in old publications, we already told you that we were going to demonstrate that implementing Universal Accessibility in a web page is a matter of intentions rather than resources. In addition, this implementation can be done progressively, encompassed in a project that we call Evolutionary Accessibility . In fact we were going to demonstrate it with the example, in our own website.

In our case we have already created a basic web page, implementing texts in easy reading, in a version that we call “ Evolutionary Accessibility Phase Zero”

Then we evolved through the following “Evolutionary” phases:

Phase 1: Numerous tools of indole and general use are added; Readable sources or dyslexia, its size, filters, zoom, keyboard navigation, large cursor, etc.

Phase 2:Aimed at cognitive diversity, providing it with pictograms and easy reading in all navigation elements, titles and concepts.

Today we EVOLVE to PHASE 3, endowing the whole web with audios in all its functions, pictograms, form fields, etc.

Also the content of the pages is logged or read automatically, option that can be disabled independently from PAU, our control panel of universal accessibility. It also has an intelligent system that avoids two audios playing at the same time. For example if PAU is reading the content of a page and I pass the mouse pointer over a menu, the content is stopped, the menu is edited, and automatically afterwards, PAU will continue to find the content exactly where it left off.

There is also an option in PAU that allows you to deactivate all the sounds of the web and all the sounds of your tools, with a single click. The sounds and audios become a great help, not a nuisance when it is not desired. PAU takes great care of the details.

In the coming days, we will continue to evolve our web to phase 4; where we will provide videos in Sign Language to the main functions; such as menus, titles and links, as well as the locution or reading of all its contents.

In this new phase of accessibility, Phase 1 includes a beta version of a plugin developed by ourselves, called PAU, Universal Accessibility Panel, with its basic accessibility tools, such as: readable sources or dyslexia, its size, filters, zoom, keyboard navigation, etc.

Today, we continue to evolve and move to a phase 2 on our website and where we will tackle content adapted to easy cognitive compression, using accessibility tools such as Pictograms and easy reading technique, although the latter is already applied from the beginning.

Pictograms in menus, titles and navigation elements

We have put pictograms in all the menu and navigation options, as well as in all the important titles and concepts of the web.

In the coming days, we will continue to evolve our web to phase 3 ; where we will provide the contents of audios and that will be of help to those people who have some reading or visual difficulty.

In this new phase of Evolutionary Accessibility Phase 1, a plugin developed by ourselves, called PAU, Universal Accessibility Panel, is included for the first time, with its active basic accessibility tools, such as:

PAU

Switch to a readable or special source for people with dyslexia.

Apply to display filters in high contrast, black and white or grayscale to the entire web.

Highlight all the links or apply a high contrast zoom to facilitate their visualization before zooming.

Make the big mouse cursor oppose it in normal size.

Change the size of the PAU, Universal accessibility panel, as well as change the size of all the sources or texts of the web.

All these tools will be available in the free version of our PAU plugin.

Evolutionary Accessibility: Phase Zero

Home » Accessibility » Archive by category: "Evolutionary Accessibility"

As we said, we are going to launch a project called “Evolutionary Accessibility” where we intend to demonstrate that the fulfillment of Universal accessibility in a web, is more a matter of will than of economic resources.

We have just launched the ZERO phase of the project. In this phase there is a design and clean code in a basic website with its sections:

Inicio-Home Page.
Quiénes somos-About Us. (Mission, vision, Values and Commitment) where the information of the company is collected.
-Service Page.
Accesibilidad PAU-Accesibility Page.
Noticias-News Page.
Trabajos-Works page, “portfolio”, where the works and the clients of the company are shown.
Contacto-Contact Form.

Is this an accessible website?

It is NOT accessible for people who use a screen reader, or for those who have severe visual, auditory and cognitive problems.

YES it is accessible for all those people with cognitive diversity due to age, functionality or ignorance of the language. Since the information is presented in a simple and clear design, with pictograms that facilitate understanding, with easy reading that eliminates language barriers. The contrast of the colors has been taken care of, the images must be clear and the videos can be stopped and activated at any time.

Accessibility Measures implemented in Phase Zero:

Logotipos y colores usados– Logos and colours used on the web, with enough contrast to facilitate reading for people with visual impairment

Lectura fácil– Texts written using Easy Reading techniques, for people with cognitive, language or compression problems.

Estructura de encabezados– Header structure consistent, hierarchical and orderly, to facilitate navigation, visualisation with support tools such as screen readers and correct indexing in search engines.

Estructura de encabezados con pictogramas– Menus, titles and headings with Pictograms, to facilitate their rapid location. as well as for people with cognitive, language or compression problems

Textos sin justificar-Text not justified, and with an adequate separation and line spacing to facilitate reading, either for people with dyslexia, visual or cognitive problems.

Navegación por teclado

– We have made a basic implementation of keyboard navigation, either by jumps between sections of the page, and with keyboard navigation by means of a tabulator.

With these measures, information is provided to a significant number of users who do not have severe diversities if they have difficulty accessing it.

Next phase

PHASE 1:

This will address the accessibility to comply with the WCAG2 standard with the AA level required by the UNE 139803 Standard in force since July 4, 2012.

These measures will facilitate access for all those people who need a screen reader to access telematic information, people with severe visual diversity.

In the next article we will tell you the measures that are adopted and why, so that together we can discover the evolution of accessibility in the world of information.

Our goal is to demonstrate that creating an accessible space to facilitate access to information for all people is a matter of will rather than resources. Accessibility can be progressively implemented from a basic page with minimal tools but that facilitate access to information to a very large number of people until they reach a much more complex page and can be accessed by those who wish, whatever their diversity.

We continue to see ourselves in this path of evolutionary accessibility, do not miss the next tools applied and their reasons. You will surely discover that improving the conditions so that everyone can access information is rewarding, and innovating involves learning and interacting with users. This transversally improves the positioning of the page in search engines or SEO, while improving the way of communicating by getting the message better, and more people.
